128th Pa History Summary
The 128th Pa was one of sixteen, nine month Pennsylvania regiments formed in August, 1862. The men came from Berks, Bucks and Lehigh Counties. At the battle of Antietam, the unit received its baptism by fire. Despite a lack of experience and very little drilling, the soldiers managed to perform well even after seeing their Colonel killed, and Lt. Colonel wounded and taken from the field. After spending the winter of 1862-63 on Maryland Heights, they proceeded to take part in Burnsides Mud March. At the battle of Chancellorsville in May, 1863, the majority of the unit were captured by General Lanes brigade on the south side of the Orange Plank Road. They played a unique part at the wounding of Stonewall Jackson. These prisoners were exchanged in time to be mustered out with the rest of the regiment on May 19, 1863.
